Globetrotting horse Highland Reel wins at Royal Ascot

ASCOT, England (AP) Globetrotting horse Highland Reel won the richest race of the Royal Ascot meeting to take his career earnings to around 6 million pounds, while American trainer Wesley A. Ward collected a second victory of the week with Con Te Partiro.

After recent triumphs in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita and the Coronation Cup at Epsom, Highland Reel claimed another Group 1 victory for leading trainer Aidan O'Brien by holding on to win the Prince of Wales's Stakes by a length. (MORE)

ASCOT, England (AP) American filly Lady Aurelia won at Royal Ascot for the second straight year, cruising to a three-length victory in the King's Stand Stakes under replacement jockey John Velazquez on Tuesday.

"She's a once-in-a-lifetime horse," said trainer Wesley A. Ward after Lady Aurelia backed up her win in the Queen Mary Stakes in 2016. (MORE)

Tapwrit wins Belmont Stakes by 2 lengths for Pletcher

NEW YORK (AP) The road to the winner's circle in the Belmont Stakes ran through the Kentucky Derby, even if the Derby and Preakness winners skipped the final leg of the Triple Crown.

Tapwrit overtook favored Irish War Cry in the stretch to win by two lengths on Saturday, giving trainer Todd Pletcher his third career victory in the Belmont. He won in 2007 with filly Rags to Riches and in 2013 with Palace Malice. (MORE)

Songbird wins comeback; Baffert, Smith win big at Belmont

NEW YORK (AP) Songbird captured her comeback, winning the $750,000 Ogden Phipps Stakes for fillies and mares, while Mike Smith and trainer Bob Baffert also starred on the Belmont Stakes undercard Saturday.

Smith won five of the first seven stakes he rode in, teaming with Baffert for four of those victories. (MORE)

Japanese horse Epicharis scratched from Belmont Stakes

NEW YORK (AP) The Belmont Stakes is down to 11 horses after Epicharis was scratched after a veterinarian exam on Saturday morning.

The New York Racing Association said the exam revealed continued inflammation in the Japanese colt's right front hoof. Epicharis wasn't ready to run the 1+-mile race three days after the colt was treated for lameness in his hoof. (MORE)
